Washington Crossing's Twilight Garden Tour Digs Into Poison and Folklore Oct. 30

Bucks Co. & Beyond Daily

The yellow two-story Hibbs House with green shutters behind a white picket fence and its kitchen garden beds in Washington Crossing Historic Park.

Not every plant in a colonial garden was there for dinner. Washington Crossing Historic Park offers Twilight Garden Tour: Poison, Potions & Folklore in the Colonial Garden on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., a dusk walk through the Hibbs House Kitchen Garden, according to the park. Registration is required.

It's a clever companion to the park's fall evenings, since it runs just before the park's Oct. 30 Lantern Tour.

What you'll learn

Park Historical Horticulturist Anna Davis leads the walk through the plants that lived on the darker edge of the 18th-century garden, per the park. Back then, gardens supplied more than food and beauty: they were also sources of medicines, protective herbs, dyes and, now and then, plants with dangerous reputations. Expect stories about herbs believed to ward off evil, plants that could heal or harm depending on their use, and the folklore around everyday garden plants in early America, from bitter wormwood to the deep red dyes of madder root.

Getting there

The program is listed at the park's Visitor Center & Historic Village, 1112 River Road, Washington Crossing. Registration is required, so sign up through the park before you go. Questions go to the Friends of Washington Crossing Park at (215) 493-4076.
