Strings Fill Fallsington Library's Second-Floor Hall for Its Fall Concert Gala Oct. 24

Bucks Co. & Beyond Daily

Bucks Co. & Beyond Daily: Fall Concert Gala, Saturday, Oct. 24. The four musicians of the Fiddlehead String Quartet with their violins, viola and cello take a bow on a stage framed by blue curtains and string lights, as the audience applauds.

Picture a string quartet tuning up on the second-floor stage of a library that has called the same building home since 1879, in front of a room full of neighbors in their best Bride of Frankenstein looks. That's the scene the Fallsington Library has planned for its Fall Concert Gala on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, from 6 to 9 p.m. at 139 Yardley Ave. in Fallsington, and it's one of the most charming ways I know to spend a late-October evening in Falls Township.

The timing is part of the fun. The gala lands on the Saturday before Halloween, and this year's theme is "Outshine the Bride ... of Frankenstein," so guests are invited to dress accordingly. Last fall, Executive Director Charlene Rendeiro described fancy dress as "optional, but encouraged," which sounds like the right spirit. It's also a fundraiser with a clear purpose: the money supports the library's programming, which includes hands-on STEAM programs, a summer activity and reading program and a monthly train club, and the library says its previous galas have raised roughly $20,000 altogether.

What's on the program

The headliner is the Fiddlehead String Quartet, back for a fourth year after playing the library's three previous galas. Guests get an hour-long concert on the second-floor stage, followed by refreshments from ShopRite of Yardley, games and the finale of the library's online auction, which features more than 20 items. Last year's version of this event was billed as the library's third annual fall concert fundraiser, so this one has quietly become a Fallsington tradition, and the library is hoping to see some new faces in the audience. Rendeiro pointed out in the library's announcement that bidders don't need to be there to take part or to win, then added, "But we would love to show off our library to some new folks this year."

The auction you can join from your couch

If Saturday night is already spoken for, you can still be part of it. The online auction opened on Fallsington Day, Oct. 10, and runs right up to 8:30 p.m. on gala night, with handmade pottery, jewelry, musical instruments, vintage décor, artwork and gift certificates for local restaurants, entertainment and attractions up for bid. Since bidders don't have to attend, it's an easy way to support a small community library and maybe walk away with a gift certificate for a night out in the process. The gala is sponsored in part by Parry Insurance and the law firm Clarke Gallagher Barbiero Amuso & Glassman.

A library founded in 1800

The setting is half the reason to go. The Fallsington Library Company was founded in 1800 and incorporated in 1802, and in 1879 it moved into the building it still uses at 139 Yardley Ave., according to the library. That second floor has worn a lot of hats over the years, serving as a community hall for concerts, plays, dances and meetings, and even as a gym for classes from the Pennsbury School. Today the library is a full-service lending library affiliated with the Bucks County Free Library, so a Fallsington card opens the whole countywide catalog. It sits in a village with deep roots of its own, since Fallsington is a classic 18th-century crossroads community where the Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends built its first brick meetinghouse around 1690, and the Fallsington Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972.

From Nick

I love that a library founded in 1800 still throws a party upstairs in the same hall where Fallsington once gathered for concerts and dances, and a string quartet in a room full of costumes sounds like exactly the right way to kick off Halloween week.
